Cars that decide if you can drive

05-Jun-2015

US Researchers have just been trialing a brand new in car device that can decide whether you are over the blood alcohol limit before you even put the key in the ignition. The device can use a number of passive air sensors and touch points such as gear levers, steering wheel and door handles to take readings on the drivers blood alcohol level. The devices are interlocked with the cars ignition system, which may then effectively disable the car. The developers expect the devices to begin appearing in vehicles within the next 5 years. The touch sensitive elements are already able to be packaged and the expected cost per car would be similar to seat belts, around $150 per car once they hit production levels.
